The First Ten Minutes of a Plumbing Emergency

Nobody reads a plumbing article at a good time. If you're here because water is actively going somewhere it shouldn't right now, the fastest useful thing you can do isn't calling us first, it's stopping the water. Here's what actually matters in the first ten minutes, before help arrives.

Know where your shutoff is before you need it

Every house has a main water shutoff, usually near where the line enters the house, at the water meter, or in a utility closet or garage. If you don't know where yours is right now, today, find it before you ever have an emergency. In the moment itself, ten minutes hunting for a valve while water keeps running is ten minutes of damage that didn't have to happen. Individual fixtures, toilets and sinks especially, usually have their own shutoff valve right where the supply line meets the fixture, which is faster to reach than the main if the problem is isolated to one spot.

A burst pipe or a line actively spraying water

Shut off the main immediately. Don't try to diagnose which pipe or fix anything yourself first, stopping the flow is the only thing that matters in that moment. Once the water's off, turn off electricity to any affected area at the breaker if water is anywhere near outlets, switches, or fixtures, since water and live wiring together is a genuine hazard and not just a plumbing problem. Then start moving anything valuable off the floor and out of the way while you wait for help.

A toilet that won't stop running or is about to overflow

This one's usually the easiest to handle fast. Turn the small shutoff valve at the base of the toilet, right where the supply line comes out of the wall or floor, clockwise until it stops. That alone solves almost every running or overflowing toilet situation immediately, without touching the main. If there's no visible shutoff or it won't turn, go to the main instead.

Sewer smell or actual sewage backing up

This is different from a supply line problem, and shutting off water won't fix it since the issue is on the drain side, not the supply side. Stop using every drain in the house, sinks, showers, the washing machine, until someone's looked at it. Adding more water into a system that's already backing up just pushes the problem further into the house. If sewage has actually come up through a drain or toilet, keep people and pets away from that area, it's a contamination issue, not just a mess.

If you smell gas, this isn't a plumbing call yet

A water heater or gas line problem can sometimes come with a gas smell, and that changes the priority list completely. If you smell gas anywhere in the house, don't flip any light switches, don't light anything, and don't try to find the leak yourself. Get everyone out of the house, leave the door open behind you, and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside before you call anyone else. Once the gas company has confirmed it's safe, that's when a plumbing or appliance repair call makes sense, not before.

While you wait for someone to get there

Take a few photos of standing water or damage for your own records before you start cleanup, since that matters more later than it feels like it does in the moment. Move anything you can off the floor. If the water's off and nothing's actively getting worse, there's no need to do anything heroic, just wait. What actually needs a same-day call versus the morning

Not everything that feels urgent at eleven at night actually is. A dripping faucet, a toilet that's slow to refill but not overflowing, or a water heater that's just not quite as hot as usual can almost always wait until morning without causing more damage. A pipe that's actively spraying, a toilet actively overflowing onto the floor, or sewage backing up cannot wait, and that's the line worth knowing before you're standing in the middle of it deciding whether to call at midnight.
